Nigeria is definitely an interesting country, likewise its leaders. Report has it that former British Prime  Minister, Mr Tony Blair is in town. On the surface, that should be a good news.

Mr Blair is, obviously, a gentleman, with heavy credentials too,  one can’t but doff one’s hat to him.

Report, also, stated that Blair has pledged to support Kaduna state and some other state governments in Nigeria to deliver good governance to the people.

Mr Blair made the pledge on Thursday when he visited Governor Nasir El-Rufai at his office in the Government House, Kaduna.

He says that the ‘Tony Blair Foundation’ will assist Kaduna state in terms of technical assistance and other support  to enable it to deliver democratic dividends to its people especially in the areas of investments, basic education, healthcare and agriculture.

Mr Blair also met with members of the Kaduna state executive council at the governor’s office where he was briefed by the governor and members of his cabinet  about the various successes recorded by  their ministries  as well as their challenges which they ask for his assistance.

He commended the relationship with his country and Nigeria, and how Kaduna and his Foundation will work together to transform the state’s public service sector for efficient service delivery and  increase prosperity.

He pointed out that the hardest thing about governance is being able to deliver on campaign promises to the people.

He assured that his foundation’s members of staff are ready to provide necessary assistance to state governments whenever required.

He, equally, described the meeting with Governor El-Rufai as an exciting opportunity to visit Nigeria and  see how  governance is being run and done.

Mr Blair says there is great goodwill and desire for the country to do well under the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration, especially in the fight against corruption.

In his response, El-Rufai said that the visit of the former Prime Minister is timely as it gave  him and his cabinet members to share their experience in governance with them.

All of these sound right, should the intentions of Blair, El-Rufai and other concerned state governors could be said to be pure, but then purity is relative, depending on the side of the coin one is looking at.

People tend to attach ‘purity’ to positive ventures only, forgetting that ‘purity’ could be applied otherwise.

There is hardly a country in the world be it underdeveloped, developing and even developed that can boast of offering its citizens ‘good governance’; and should Blair be that good about giving good governance, he should still be prime minister in his country.

But then, that doesn’t mean that Blair did not earn some credit during his tenure as prime minister, on the flipside, should one consider the way and manner Blair and his Labour Party were unceremoniously ushered out of power, one won’t but agree that politics is hardball play.

Last May, Blair was said to have expressed his intention to plunge back into domestic politics in order to fight against Brexit; the ardent Europhile, believes that voters should have the chance to change their mind once the final EU exit deal becomes clear.

As an aside, Brexit could, at least, not be considered to be a smart move should one weigh the pros and cons.

Blair, back then, said he wanted to build a political movement to shape the policy debate as Britain starts its negotiations to leave the European Union.

“This Brexit thing has given me a direct motivation to get more involved in the politics,” he told the Daily Mirror newspaper.

“You need to get your hands dirty and I will.

“I know the moment I stick my head out the door I’ll get a bucket of wotsit poured all over me, but I really do feel passionate about this.

“I don’t want to be in the situation where we pass through this moment of history and I hadn’t said anything because that would mean I didn’t care about this country. I do.

“I am not sure I can turn something into a political movement but I think there is a body of ideas out there people would support.”

He said his push was not about defying the vote to leave the European Union.

He said leaving the European single market and seeking a free trade agreement, as is Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May’s intention, would be “relegating ourselves” from the top order.

Incoming data are yet to give one the cause to smile at the prospect of  Brexit.

The latest shew that London is expected to suffer from Brexit more than other regions of the UK, with the financial sector expected to lose up to 70,000 jobs, a report of the UK-based think tank Centre for London said on Thursday.

“The risks to London’s economy, from the loss of these workers and students, and access to the European Single Market, are considerable.

“70,000 jobs could be lost in financial and related services alone,” the think tank said, adding that London depends on students and workers from across the European Union “to a far greater extent than the rest of the country.”

According to the report, such losses would be a significant blow for financial services of the UK capital, but the sector would still survive.

“Highly-specialised clusters like financial services and other world city functions are ‘sticky’, and London would still retain the critical mass to be one of the major global centres for financial services,” the report stated.

The think tank noted that London “needs to remain open, and also needs to become more affordable and liveable.”

Back to Nigeria, the issue of ‘good governance’ remains one which many leaders (past and present) prefer to pay lip service to.

Blair’s presence, definitely, won’t turn the tables, but his contributions would, of course, be of immense interest.
