Pray For Buhari!!! Pray For Nigeria!!!

The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday, added more fuel to the country’s, already, tensed up polity; when, he, again, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign, alleging that the President is on life support.

On the face value, this information points toward only one direction: Crisis!

But then, taking a closer look at the revelation, it is impossible for Buhari to resign formally, at least, should he be in the condition cited.

He needs to be conscious to accomplish such a task, albeit the National Assembly can act on it if properly approached on the matter.

The Senate had promptly intervened in a near similar fashion when it placed the Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in the ‘Acting’ capacity despite the fact that the official memo Buhari sent to the Senate to inform it of the need to embark on another medical leave did not arrogate the authority to him.

As sensitive as this information is, one would not but believe the source, Gov. Fayose. By virtue of his position, it is normal for him to have access to such classified information, moreover, he has shared many of such information with Nigerians in the past and most, if not all, have come to pass sooner or later.

It is, however, absurd that despite repeated warnings, the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) has unilaterally decided to play the fool by putting the country in reverse gear all over again after the emotional trauma that the country and its citizens went through during the late former president Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua’s debacle.

For months, the country was held in the throes of a bitter power struggle, and having survived such a cruel ordeal, one would think that the political class would have learnt its lesson and prevent a recurrence but it is now glaring that it is apparently not the case.

It is also unfortunate should it be true, that the country’s First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari left the country, making everyone to believe, that she was going to visit her ailing husband in London; to return to a rousing reception and even splashing Osinbajo with praises and accolades- also lauding him for being faithful and loyal to her husband, only for Nigerians to discover later, at first, through a rumour and spat with an unknown group; and sometime after to be confronted with the truth, through the most unpleasant way, a press conference by Gov. Fayose, that she did not get to see her husband, while she was carrying on before all Nigerians that she had indeed seen him.

These not enough, it is, also, a thing of shame that the presidency should play on the intelligence of Nigerians by releasing an audio tape, claiming it was the president’s voice message to Nigerians on the occasion of the Eid-el-Fitr.

The Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, had, in a statement last Saturday conveyed the message of the ailing president to Nigerians.

Constitutionally, there is no need to jump to conclusions, the Senate had long settled the matter, Osinbajo will continue in his role as the ‘Acting President’ till further developments.

However, the most pertinent question is; what is in it for Nigerians?

The answer is simple: Nothing!

The fact is that Nigerians would get the same treatment regardless ‘whom’ the occupant of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja is; be it Buhari or Osinbajo.

A case in point, when Buhari took over as president, one of his earliest promises was to ensure the prompt ‘clean-up’ of the Ogoniland. It took him several months and several trips abroad before he could get himself to launch the project physically. After launching the project, the presidency went to sleep, Buhari  embarked on his first medical vacation, handed properly to Osinbajo who visited the area (South-South) on two different occasions. Osinbajo was well accepted and treated to so much pomp and circumstance. Ogoniland remained untouched.

Buhari returned from medical vacation, spent some time in the country and had to rush out for another vacation, then all hell breaks loose, a Senate committee, suddenly, wants to know what has hampered the clean-up exercise and who is in charge of that committee, Senator Oluremi Tinubu the wife of the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. However, aside the usual media exposes, the project remains untouched.

Nigerians should thus expect lots of such dramas- APC is fond of them, from Senate President, Bukoa Sarki’s case, raids and arraignments of judges/ justices, face-offs between the Executive and the Legislature, Sambo Dasuki, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, to Nnamdi Kanu and company, the list is endless but ‘social benefits’ popularly referred to as ‘dividends of democracy’ is not guaranteed.

And in the parlance of the human rights activists, it is going to be a case of ‘all motion, no movement’.

Still on Osinbajo, the next matter on the line is the 2019 Presidential Election. Report has it that Buhari signed an initial agreement of a single term of four years.

Former president Goodluck Jonathan signed a similar agreement and reneged on the deal. He did not satisfy those whom he negotiated with, and towards the expiration of his tenure ran back to Nigerians. One of the carrots he threw to Nigerians was the removal of the N10 he had initially placed on the pump price of petrol, an increment that had aroused much agitation and brought the country to a standstill for close to a week and also turned Ojota Motor Park, Lagos to ‘Rally Ground’.

Not done, Jonathan, thereafter, embarked on the most expensive political campaign in the history of the country’s presidential elections.

Jonathan’s desperation then begs the question; since when has the votes of Nigerians in an election ever counted?

Jonathan, as expected, was eased out of office by those who negotiated him into office in the first place. Then comes the ridiculous; Jonathan lays the blame of his ousting from office at the door step of U.S. former President Barak Obama!

Osinbajo has enough godfathers to negotiate on his behalf, Tinubu is there; and of course former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who negotiated Jonathan’s ascendance.

Since his boss travelled on this impromptu medical vacation, Osinbajo has been trying to know the North. And the ‘Quit Notice’ issued by some elders and youths to the Igbo residing in the region, has somewhat turned out in Osinbajo’s favour as he has spent the better part of the last couple of weeks holding meetings with who matters in the region.

The region craves for power more than any of the other regions in the country, so Osinbajo must have had an ample time relating with the prominent individuals from there, at least, enough to wet the ground before the real horse-trading ensues.

Yes, the stakes are high, some prominent Nigerians from the North are very much interested in the country’s number one office.

Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar is one of them. Despite being a founding member of the ruling APC, his business interests have been objects of target by this administration, most likely to discourage him from pulling the same stunt he pulled against his then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007, after his boss, Obasanjo refused to follow protocol by handing over the reins of power to him, at least in a democratic manner.

It is hard at the moment to read former military president Ibrahim Babangida, at least on the surface, he has not moved a muscle.

The person who succeeds Osinbajo as vice-president also matters, equally, is the region such emerges from. The Igbo nation desires the presidency too, and they have not hidden their feelings. APC has promised the South-East a shot at the presidency, probably, this is the time to deliver.

Nonetheless, Nigerians should continue to pray for Buhari.
